We
did not do the original roof. We are showing why its
critical to have your roof checked often!
We or the
homeowners could not see these missing shingles over
the roof vent from the ground until we did the roof
inspection. He just knew he had a serious leak in
last nights heavy rains
Standard Two story
house, back section of house with obstructed views
from the ground.
Noticed the new
construction installation standards there? Missing
felt - inexpensive plastic vent. You can see where
the ply wood was exposed left upper corner of vent.
Some poor new work construction standards, a missing
shingle tab originally providing just a small leak
that was absorbed by the insulation. Once the bigger
winds came through in April of 08 a couple more
shingles blown away and your left with a serious
leak as this homeowner found out the hard way.
The damage was to a
bedroom and was extensive. A roofer was called in
(us) to replace just 4 missing shingles. A simple
service call turns into a minor remodeling project.
But if you like replacing drywall, re-texturing, and
priming and painting an entire bedroom? Then just
leave your couple blown shingles alone. We will be
happy to fix the bedroom for you as well : )

What causes your
shingle roof to blow away?
There are a few
reasons the shingles blow off your roof in light to
moderate winds. Today manufactures specs on shingles
blowing off are more than 70 miles an hour yet here
in Dallas. A 5 year old 20yr shingle will start to
blow away in winds less than 30-50 miles and hr. A
30yr shingle will start to blow away after 8 years
The reasons are
basic:
- Installation
standards of course play a major role in any
successful roof system with poor installation
standards from crews that are not qualified. Not
putting the nails where they are supposed to be.
Or poor supervision
- Ventilation
is the other major key which there is a serious
lack of over all here in the DFW area. Poor
soffit vent systems and out dated roof vents
such as turbines are still in use. Houses with
no soffit vent will have problems more often
than houses with vents
- General heat in
the attic over all causes nails to rise back up,
slightly lifting the shingle tab exposing it to
the winds and leaving room for the winds to lift
up and pull apart the failing glue holding the
shingles together
- The tar meant to
seal the shingles together has now started to
dry rot, dry up, no longer holds the shingle
together. Again caused from the lack of
ventilation is the attic
At this point since
the tar is no longer holding the shingles together,
odds are the roof will keep having these problems
with blowing or missing shingles.
To correct
premature roof life cycle and or from shingles
blowing away due to light to moderate winds:
You need a new
roof to start with...
